What memory care provides

Memory care is senior living designed for people with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. A secured setting helps manage unsafe exit-seeking, while predictable routines, appropriate activities, and staff training support daily life. Services commonly include meals, personal care, medication assistance, housekeeping, and supervision.

Memory care may be a neighborhood within assisted living, a standalone community, or a small residential home. Arizona does not issue a separate “memory care” license. The Department of Health Services licenses assisted living at supervisory, personal, or directed care service levels. When it may be a good fit

Consider memory care when a person living with dementia:

• Needs supervision because of exit-seeking, getting lost, or other safety risks.
• Leaves appliances, faucets, or doors in an unsafe state.
• Has trouble recognizing family, managing medications, or handling daily hygiene.
• Has nighttime confusion, agitation, or care needs that are difficult to manage safely at home.
• Needs more structure and specialized care than standard assisted living provides.

What it costs in the East Valley

Memory care in the East Valley typically costs $5,000 to $7,500 per month—generally $1,000 to $1,500 more than assisted living because of the secured setting, dementia training, and specialized programming. Scottsdale's premium communities can cost more, while Mesa often has more moderate options.

Expect a base rate plus care charges tied to the assessment. Ask whether supplies, medication services, escorts, or one-to-one support cost extra. ALTCS may help qualifying members pay for covered long-term care services, and VA Aid & Attendance may help eligible veterans and surviving spouses.

How it differs from other care

• Assisted living provides personal care but may not offer a secured dementia setting or the same specialized routines.
• In-home care can support someone at home. As supervision hours rise, families should compare the full cost and whether the home can remain safe.
• Skilled nursing focuses on licensed nursing and rehabilitation. A person with dementia may also need skilled nursing when medical needs cannot be managed in memory care.

Questions to ask

• What dementia training do direct-care staff receive initially and each year?
• How do you respond to exit-seeking, nighttime wakefulness, distress, and behavior changes?
• How are doors and outdoor areas secured, and what happens during an evacuation?
• What is the written monthly total for this assessment, and what can make it increase?
• How do you communicate with families about changes in condition?
