What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living is a residential option for older adults who need help with everyday activities but do not need the round-the-clock medical care of a nursing home. Residents live in their own apartment or room within a licensed community and receive support with what professionals call activities of daily living: bathing, dressing, grooming, using the bathroom, moving safely, and taking medications on schedule. Meals, housekeeping, laundry, transportation, and social activities are typically included.

In Arizona, assisted living is licensed by the Arizona Department of Health Services (AZDHS) and can be delivered in a large community or in a small residential care home (often a 10-bed house in a regular neighborhood).
